A remarkable relic hidden beneath the shadows of skyscrapers and factory sprawl of modern Guangzhou, Xiguan Antique City has a charm that no uptown market can compete.
Nestled by Liwanhu Park next to the protected zone of Xiguan Residences, Guangzhou Xiguan Antique City houses a whopping number of around 160 shops, sprawling along a 1,640-foot-long street with a short walking distance from Changshou lu metro station, Line 2.
Expect to find a dizzying array of curios that you would want to lay your hands on, ranging from Chinese ceramics, porcelain vases, teapots to rare scripts, calligraphy sets, wooden statues of Buddha, jade etc, attracting curio enthusiasts, treasure-hunters and collectors from home and abroad.
As the only antique market approved by cultural relic management departments, Guangzhou Xiguan antique city is a much safer spot to snap up curios than from street vendors. However, if you are foreigner looking to export antiques from China, there are some special regulations and here are some tips before going into the deal.
- Choose government-owned shops.
- Make sure the antiques you are about to buy carry wax seals and are allowed to be exported from China.
- Don’t lay hands on antiques before 1795 as they are not allowed to be exported.
- Keep the receipts/bills for Custom use when leaving China.
